Maternity and Women's Health Care, 10e [Hardcover]

Maternity and Women's Health Care, 10e [Hardcover]

Book Description

February 23, 2011 0323074294 978-0323074292 10
With comprehensive coverage of maternal, newborn, and women's health nursing, Maternity & Women's Health Care, 10th Edition provides evidence-based coverage of everything you need to know about caring for women of childbearing age. It's the #1 maternity book in the market -- and now respected authors Dr. Deitra Leonard Lowdermilk, Dr, Shannon E. Perry, Kitty Cashion, and Kathryn R. Alden have improved readability and provided a more focused approach! Not only does this text emphasize childbearing issues and concerns, including care of the newborn, it addresses wellness promotion and management of common women's health problems. In describing the continuum of care, it integrates the importance of understanding family, culture, and community-based care. New to this edition is the most current information on care of the late preterm infant and the 2008 updated fetal monitoring standards from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
  • A logical organization builds understanding by presenting wellness content first, then complications.
  • Critical Reasoning exercises offer real-life situations in which you can develop analytical skills and apply their knowledge.
  • Teaching for Self-Management boxes offer a guide to communicating follow-up care to patients and their families.
  • Signs of Potential Complications boxes help you recognize the signs and symptoms of complications and provide immediate interventions.
  • Procedure boxes offer easy-to-use, step-by-step instructions for maternity skills and procedures.
  • Emergency boxes may be used for quick reference in critical situations.
  • Medication Guide boxes provide an important reference for common drugs and their interactions.

  • Family content emphasizes the importance of including family in the continuum of care.
  • Nursing Care Plans include specific guidelines and rationales for interventions for delivering effective nursing care.

  • Student resources on the companion Evolve website include assessment and childbirth videos, animations, case studies, critical thinking exercises with answers, nursing skills, anatomy reviews, a care plan constructor, review questions, an audio glossary, and more.
  • Content updates provide the most current practice guidelines, including expanded information on the late preterm infant and fetal heart rate pattern identification.
  • New content on obesity provides the latest information on this increasingly common condition.
  • Safety Alerts help in developing competencies related to safe nursing practice in conjunction with the QSEN initiative on quality and safety in nursing care.
  • Updated Evidence-Based Practice boxes highlight current research to improve patient outcomes.
  • Updated NICHD fetal monitoring standards provide guidelines reflecting current practice, as recommended by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
  • Video clips on the companion Evolve website reinforce key skills performed in the maternity setting.
  • Audio Key Points on Evolve make it easy to review core content while on the go.
  • Streamlined nursing process information is summarized in boxes, making it easier to identify information on major diseases and conditions.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
The Pregnancy Book is an excellent all-in-one guide to pregnancy from William and Martha Sears, creators of the concept of "attachment parenting." Each of the book's chapters represents a month, and deals with physical and emotional changes, describes the growth of the fetus, and discusses common concerns. The authors also focus on nutrition, exercise, information and support for home births and birthing centers, traveling while pregnant, how to avoid episiotomy, and so on. The approach is gentle, thorough, and includes more information than some month-by-month guides, which makes The Pregnancy Book an excellent choice for pregnant couples.

From Library Journal
The Searses, popular childcare experts and authors (e.g., Parenting the Fussy Baby and High-Need Child, LJ 8/96), have teamed up with obstetrician Holt to give us this work. Using a month-by-month format with nice illustrations that show normal fetal development, they discuss a wide range of pregnancy options without judgmental bias. Scattered throughout are helpful hints and stories from other pregnant mothers that give the book a comfortable feel. Unfortunately, adequate information on possible problems is missing from the text itself, though the preface does note that rare conditions are covered in an appendix (not available for review). A nice supplement to Arlene Eisenberg and Heidi Merkoff's What To Expect When You're Expecting (Workman, 1995. rev. ed.) and The Mayo Clinic Complete Book of Pregnancy & Baby's First Year (LJ 1/95). Given the popularity of the authors, expect requests.?KellyJo Houtz Griffin, Auburn, Wash.

Maternity SI-LOC, developed by IAOM, is tapered and wider at the innominates so pressure is distributed more evenly. Includes a special, detachable abdominal support pad.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews
- This version of he SI-Loc belt is more comfortable in the front than the standard one. Both help with the back SI pain. The Maternity version has 2 separate pieces which makes it a little more cumbersome to put on. It is a little more giving (elastic) than the standard one, too. It recommended putting it on over underware, which probably would be even more comfortable, but then you have to re-do it each time you use the bath room. I use it under my underware like the original SI belt. Also, the front pad tends to show through clothing.

-I am 26 weeks pregnant with my second child and am experiencing a lot of pelvic pressure. My nurse midwife recommended that I get this belt. My only regret is not buying this sooner. The relief I felt was immediate! The midwife said this belt is better than the usual ones sold at maternity stores and I couldn't agree more. It provides the much needed support without that constrictive feeling. I checked around for the best deal and the Amazon seller The Therapy Connection at HPMS, Inc. has the best price on the web (free and fast shipping too!).

-This SI belt is used for pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain. It comes in two pieces, one worn over the other, so it's fairly thick. You won't want to wear any thin, clingy clothes over this, because the lumps will be obvious.

I'm not sure that I'd want to try buying it over the Internet. If you have to, then think "men's sizes". They run large. If you're buying XL maternity pants, then the L/XL will probably fit you with room to spare. If your pants are size L, then consider the S/M size.

You put on the part with the wide panel first, basically as low as you can without interfering with your legs when you sit down, which is well below your belly button. If yours is on the large side, then you're going to have a problem with the unsecured end of the wide panel trying to crawl up during the day. This can be fixed with a safety pin or (if you're handy with a needle) by adding an extra dot of velcro to secure it.

The narrower piece goes right over the wide piece. Again, if yours is on the large side, this is going to be a problem, because the elastic belt from the first piece will cover up nearly all of the velcro loops that you're supposed to attach the second piece to. One solution for those with a sewing machine is to shorten the wide panel's elastic strap: double it up for a couple of inches in the middle and sew a big X through the elastic to securely shorten it. That will give you enough room on the wide velcro panel to attach the second belt.

Finally, they don't show you this in the pictures, but the wide panel in front has a stiff, narrow band of gray fabric around it. That band of fabric produces big, red, itchy dents where it digs into your skin all day. You'll want to stuff a little pad of gauze or other padding inside the band, especially right where the elastic belt attaches to the wide panel. The rest of it is pretty comfortable, but the designer needed to seriously re-think this one spot.

According to the physical therapists, if pregnancy hormones make your pelvic bones go wandering, getting a belt like this is one of the most effective things you can do to stabilize them and reduce your pain. It won't be enough for everyone, but it is often very helpful. However, if your problem is the much more common "swayback" from the weight of the baby pulling your belly forward, which often produces sciatica and lower back pain, then this won't do any good at all. I recommend that you make sure this is actually what you need before you buy it.

 - A comparison of three different maternity support belts

At 22 weeks pregnant, I developed pain in my right hip and leg. The pain became worse as the weeks went by, and by 26 weeks, I almost couldn't walk normal anymore. After talking to my ob/gyn, she suggested I try a maternity support belt to relieve the pressure on my sciatic nerve. I read a number of reviews on Amazon, and finally decided to order two different belts, based on the good reviews each one received. While I was waiting for my belts to arrive from Amazon, I also went to Babies R Us and bought one there. Here are my reviews for each belt:

One of my choices from Amazon was the "Soft Form Maternity Support" belt ($ 33.99). As soon as it arrived, I took it out of the package and was a little turned off. The belt's color is a really dark brown, which I wasn't too thrilled with. When I tried it on, I noticed how thick the material is, which adds bulk underneath clothing. First, I put on the abdominal support pad, which really cradles your belly. Felt kind of nice. Then, I attached the belt and the upper tummy strap. I didn't like either one of these. The belt is split lengthwise into two panels across the back, which makes adjustments a little annoying, and it was rolling (or folding) down on top. The Velcro taps on the belt are wider than the abdominal pad, leaving parts of the Velcro sticking out either on top, where it scratches your stomach, or on the bottom, where it scratches your legs. The tummy strap is thick and scratchy. No matter how I adjusted it, I couldn't get comfortable in this thing. I hope I can return it for a refund. (Note: I just found out I CAN'T return this, so I wasted 34 bucks.)

My second choice from Amazon was the "Mother-to-be Maternity Support" belt ($ 31.98). As soon as it arrived, I tried it on and loved it. The abdominal support pad is soft and comfortable. The belt is made from strong material and really hugs your back, which feels great and supportive. The belt doesn't roll down or fold over and really keeps it shape. The Velcro taps fit perfectly on the abdominal pad and are flat against the belly. Even though it is a strong belt, it also feels soft and stretches with your movements. The tummy strap is a little thick, but still feels comfortable. Initially, the top and bottom edge of the belt are a little scratchy, but I imagine I can get used to that. It's a minor price to pay to be pain free once again. The edges might still soften up a little, as the belt gets broken in with repeated wear and washings. Also, the belt hugs the body so well, it doesn't show underneath my maternity clothes. The only negative thing I can see with this belt is the fact that the back panel doesn't have the little breathe strips like other belts. This might cause extra sweating during the summer, but I would still take the sweat over the pain.

At Babies R Us, I bought the "Especially for Mom Maternity Support" belt ($ 32.69). The nice thing about buying it at a store was that I was able to try it on before I bought it. Once I brought it home, I put it on right away. Everything about this belt is great. The materials are soft and comfortable. I'm wearing it on my bare skin for most of the day, and it doesn't irritate or scratch at all. It fits great, and the support is excellent for a soft, light-weight belt like this. The pain in my right hip and leg pretty much disappeared after wearing it for a short time. The belt has little breathe strips built in, so it is really easy to wear even in the summer. It keeps its shape without rolling or folding down. The belt fits very well and doesn't show underneath clothing. Overall, this is my favorite of the three belts. If you can get this at a store near you, I'd say buy it. If not, get the "Mother-to-be Maternity Support" belt from Amazon.

- A friend loaned me her's when I was pregnant. I have a herniated disc and this thing was a LIFE-SAVER! You can wear it easily under clothing, and it is really comfortable! I absolutely recommend getting one!

- This Maternity Back Support is must for any pregnancy. It works by relieving the strain that the weight causes on the lower back. I would recommend this product to any pregnant woman when she starts to feel the strain of the weight of the baby. It's very easy to put on and is comfortable to wear. It's expensive but worth the cost.
